Sometimes a bedroom needs more than a change of colour. Small chips, dents and worn areas can leave walls looking tired, even when the room itself is well cared for. For this Halls Head bedroom repaint, we refreshed the existing grey matt walls with Dulux Feather Soft in a low-sheen finish. The result was a brighter, fresher room with a gentle finish suited to everyday living.

Preparing the walls before painting

Before applying the new colour, the chips and dents needed attention. Painting over them would change their colour, but the uneven surfaces would still be there. Filling and smoothing those areas was an important part of the repaint. Repair edges need to blend into the surrounding wall to reduce the chance of raised edges showing through the finished coating. Preparation also involves checking the existing paint, removing dust and using a suitable primer on repaired or exposed areas where required.

These details are easy to overlook once a room is finished, but they make a noticeable difference to the final appearance.

Why low sheen worked well here

Matt can be a beautiful choice for a bedroom. Its low reflection creates a soft appearance and can help disguise minor surface imperfections. Changing the finish here was about choosing what suited this room, rather than suggesting matt was the wrong choice. Low sheen offered a gentle lustre without the stronger shine of semi-gloss or gloss. In a suitable interior wall paint, it also provides a practical, washable finish for everyday marks around furniture, switches and doorways.

The paint formulation matters as well as the sheen: some premium matt paints are washable too. For this repaint, low sheen gave us the balance of appearance and practicality we wanted.

A softer colour and a fresher room

Moving from the existing grey to Feather Soft changed the feel of the bedroom. The finished room looked lighter and fresher while retaining a quiet, comfortable atmosphere. That brighter impression came from the colour change and the refreshed surfaces together. Low sheen added a subtle finish; it was not simply the sheen that made the room feel brighter.

A successful repaint brings several decisions together: attending to the walls, choosing a colour that works in the space, and selecting a finish that suits how the room is used.
